The two-thousand-two-hundred
Child Tax Credit increase under the 2025 tax law · Child Tax Credit, as amended 2025
The maximum Child Tax Credit rose from $2,000 to $2,200 per child and will track inflation. Because it is only partly refundable, many of the lowest-income families still do not receive the full amount.
What changed
- Maximum Child Tax Credit: $2,000 → $2,200 per qualifying child, indexed to inflation.
- Still only partly refundable, so the full amount is not available to many low-wage families.
Who it touches
Families with qualifying children who file taxes, more fully for those with income-tax liability.
What it does not do
- It is not the 2021 expanded monthly credit.
- It is not a monthly check; it arrives through the tax year.
Say this tonight
The country increased the child tax credit a little. Some families will see about two hundred dollars more per child. Families with the least income may still not get the full amount, because of how the credit is written.
If you file taxes, check whether you qualify for the full credit this year (IRS Working Families Tax Cuts page). If you use a preparer, ask one question: are we getting the full $2,200?
