Federally seeded child savings accounts · ‘Trump Accounts’: $1,000 seed, from July 2026
Eligible children can receive a one-time $1,000 federal contribution in a new long-term savings account. The account cannot be funded before July 4, 2026. It is a seed, not a college plan by itself.
What changed
- Eligible children can receive a one-time $1,000 federal contribution in a new account.
- Accounts cannot be funded before July 4, 2026; others may contribute later under IRS rules.
Who it touches
Eligible children whose adults open and maintain the account.
What it does not do
- It is not automatic for every child until someone opens it.
- It is not a substitute for yearly income support or school meals.
Say this tonight
The country is offering a one-time thousand dollars in a savings account for some children. We would have to open it. We could not spend it on regular bills. It is a later-you kind of money.
Read the IRS page on these accounts and put a calendar reminder for the funding date. If you have a tax preparer, ask them to add ‘child savings account eligibility’ to this year’s checklist.
